Health officials said they are also monitoring two Georgia residents who returned from the same cruise. The two individuals traveled aboard the MV Hondius, which has been connected to reported cases of Hantavirus that have left three people dead, the Georgia Department of Public Health said. For Georgians who were not on the cruise ship where the outbreak happened, Guest said the risk of developing Hantavirus is exceptionally low.
Medical professionals say the two individuals, along with the other passengers, will continue to be monitored. Both passengers tested negative for the virus while at Emory. State officials said both Georgia residents are currently in good health and have not shown any signs of infection.
11Alive asked her why two of the passengers from the ship were able to return home and be monitored by DPH, while two other passengers ended up at Emory. The two passengers allowed to disembark at home in late April, a time when Guest said it was not well known what was happening on the ship. The two people, who arrived in Atlanta on May 11 and were described as a couple, with one of them asymptomatic, have returned to Nebraska.
