A second Arizonan tied to the MV Hondius outbreak is now being evaluated out of state. PHOENIX (AZFamily/AP), Health officials confirmed Wednesday there is a second Arizonan linked to the Hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship who is getting assessed out of state. As of Tuesday, the outbreak has now reached 11 total reported cases, nine of which have been confirmed.
The Arizona Department of Health Services said the CDC contacted officials May 5 about another person from Arizona who was on the MV Hondius. State health officials didn't say if this second person has the virus, but said once that patient comes back to Arizona, they will be monitored by their local public health department. Last week, the state health department said it was monitoring the first Arizonan who was on the cruise ship and was returning to the state.
ADHS said it is still unclear whether the resident had close contact with anyone who has been infected and that monitoring could continue for up to 42 days. Health officials said the patient was asymptomatic and they didn't have any evidence the person was infected. Three people on the cruise died, including a Dutch couple who health officials believe were the first exposed to the virus while visiting South America.
