The CDC issued quarantine orders Monday for two of the M/V Hondius cruise ship passengers brought to Omaha for observation at the National Quarantine Unit at UNMC-Nebraska Medicine. The news comes as the New York Times reported that one woman was planning to leave the quarantine facility until she was ordered to stay for at least two more weeks. All of the passengers at the facility had previously not been officially under quarantine.
The remaining 16 passengers being housed at the facility "were requested to remain" there through May 31, which would complete their 21-day monitoring period, according to the CDC update. Most of the M/V Hondius cruise ship passengers under observation at the UNMC-Nebraska Medicine facility arrived there early Monday, May 11. Two additional passengers were brought to the National Quarantine Unit on Friday.
The facility at UNMC-Nebraska Medicine is the only federally funded quarantine unit in the U.S., allowing for safe housing and monitoring of those who may have been exposed to high-consequence infectious diseases. Since the passengers disembarked from the ship, three additional cases of Hantavirus have been identified, one each in France, Spain, and recently, Canada. Previously, officials had said that they were encouraging the passengers brought to the unit to remain there for observation, with indications that they might be able to finish out the full exposure monitoring period at home.
