Dutch health authorities cleared the Hondius cruise ship for service on May 30, 2026, following a Hantavirus outbreak. The Hondius underwent deep cleaning and disinfection after the outbreak occurred in late April and early May. The Rotterdam Municipal Health Service (GGD) issued a statement on May 30 declaring that from a public health perspective, no obstacles remain to putting the ship into operation.
The company continues to cite information from the World Health Organization and others suggesting the virus was brought aboard by passengers infected while traveling in South America. Passengers from the cruise also remain in quarantine in various countries, about halfway through their quarantine period. So far, only one additional case has been reported in Spain.
As of May 21, the WHO reported a total of 13 cases, including three originally reported deaths from the ship. The expedition cruise ship is still docked in Rotterdam, undergoing resupply and preparations for its return to service. Deep cleaning and disinfection were completed, and the vessel is set to depart for Svalbard on June 6.
