Two people suspected of having exposure to Hantavirus have arrived in Atlanta, according to airport officials. The three hospitals are among the 13 hospitals in the United States with biocontainment units equipped to handle situations like the Hantavirus outbreak. Hantavirus is usually spread by the inhalation of contaminated rodent droppings and isn't easily transmitted between people. First Alert Chopper saw the patients in full-body protective gear arriving on a Kalitta Air plane at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport just before 10 a.m.
Kalitta Air is the same airline that transported several Americans from a cruise ship hit by the deadly outbreak to the University of Nebraska's Davis Global Center, where they are set to quarantine for a number of days. The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said during a press conference in Atlanta that one of the two people transported to Emory University Hospital's Serious Communicable Diseases Unit showed symptoms. Meanwhile, the CDC is working with five states, Georgia, Arizona, California, Texas and Virginia, to monitor seven passengers who previously disembarked from the ship. In addition to Emory and the University of Nebraska, patients are also quarantining at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) said they were notified on Monday by the CDC that the two patients were being transported to Emory Hospital. One of them is from Brunswick, according to Atlanta News First's sister station WTOC in Savannah. Symptoms usually show between one and eight weeks after exposure. They did not say if either person tested positive for the virus. A CDC official said the symptomatic patient showed "very broad" symptoms when they were tested in the Canary Islands, but that the CDC and Emory were taking a "conservative" approach with their treatment.
