NC Department of Health and Human Services says it is closely monitoring the outbreak but there are currently no cases in the state. NCDHHS says there are currently no Hantavirus cases in the state and the risk of infection is low. The Hantavirus aboard the M/V Hondius cruise ship was determined to be the Andes virus, the only type with human-to-human transmission.
The one resident has been evacuated with the rest of the United States passengers to the University of Nebraska Medical Center's National Quarantine Unit. Kelly Kimple, Director of NCDHHS Division of Public Health, said. It's a fairly rare virus in the United States, with the only one North Carolina case in 1995.
Symptoms include fever, fatigue, deep muscle aches and severe respiratory issues. Symptoms can develop between four to 42 days after exposure.
