In a release, the Mohave County Department of Public Health said the case was confirmed in coordination with the Arizona Department of Health Services. Officials say they are not clear on the source of the person's exposure and local transmission can not be ruled out. Furthermore, the strain common in Arizona and the southwest is known as the Sin Nombre virus, which is found mostly in deer mice.
County officials say Sin Nombre is not transmitted from person to person like Andes. Sin Nombre infections mostly happen when people inhale dust contaminated with nesting materials for rodents, urine, saliva and feces. Officials say this strain is not the same as the Andes virus recently linked to a cruise ship in South America.
