90-Second Read: Breaking: Some Hantavirus cruise passengers released after 42 days in Perth quarantine

Jun 22, 4:04 PM EDT

Six passengers from Australia and NZ linked to the deadly MV Hondius Hantavirus outbreak have completed 42 days of quarantine in Perth and been cleared to return home. Six people who were on board a cruise ship at the centre of a deadly Hantavirus outbreak have been released from quarantine after 42 days living in isolation. The group had been on board the MV Hondius, a cruise ship bound for Antarctica, when an outbreak of Hantavirus spread on board in April, ultimately killing three people. The four Australian citizens, one permanent resident and one New Zealander have been living at a centre originally built for housing COVID-19 patients on the outer fringes of Perth after arriving in the city on May 15.

90-Second Read: 2 more cruise ship passengers leave Omaha quarantine after deadly Hantavirus outbreak

Jun 19, 10:23 AM EDT

UNMC said that six passengers now remain at the quarantine unit of the 18 who arrived in Omaha on May 11, diverted from the affected MV Hondius ship. However, symptoms of Hantavirus can take up to 42 days to appear, a UNMC statement said, so all passengers were "strongly encouraged" to complete that longer period and stay through June 21. The World Health Organization reported in late May that a total of 11 confirmed cases, including three deaths, had been linked to the Andes Hantavirus strain outbreak on the cruise ship. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requested that passengers remain at the NQU through May 31.

There were no further deaths during the outbreak -- and all 12 confirmed Hantavirus cases were passengers on the ship. The 12 confirmed cases -- and another considered likely -- pale in comparison to the tens of thousands of Hantavirus infections recorded worldwide every year. The Andes strain that spread on the ship is the only form of Hantavirus known to do this, however documented outbreaks have been very rare. The deaths of three people who had been onboard the MV Hondius sparked a global health alert in early May, prompting fears the ship's many international passengers could spread the rodent-borne disease across the world.

The Andes virus, the germ behind the cruise ship outbreak, is a particular focus of researchers because it is the only Hantavirus thought to be able to spread between people in some cases. Separately, in Chile, the Ministry of Health has confirmed 15 deaths and 42 cases of Hantavirus so far this year. They and others hope the attention that the cruise ship outbreak brought to the virus, and concern that Hantavirus infections could become more common as climate change is expected to increase contact between people and rodents, may bring new momentum to the hunt.

As public health officials around the world monitor dozens of former passengers and crewmembers of the MV Hondius for signs of Hantavirus infection, scientists are hoping to learn more about the mysterious and sometimes deadly virus that caused the outbreak. So far, evidence suggests the shipboard outbreak happened when one or two people were infected ashore and then passed the Hantavirus to others on board. Argentinian authorities dispute that the outbreak started at the landfill, pointing out that the rodents don't live in the Tierra del Fuego region of southern Argentina where the Dutch couple joined the cruise and that region has never had a human case of Hantavirus. Scientists still don't know why Andes Hantavirus is the only one shown to spread from person to person.
